Poon was born in Fujian, China in 1963. He studied oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing from 1988 to 1991. He utilized unique greyish colours on cityscapes and other paintings for added visual layers and provoked exploration and review of contemporary social phenomena.
