WAI King-Man

WAI King Man (b. 1963, Pingnan, Guangxi) is a Hong Kong-based artist whose practice spans watercolor, ink, oil, and acrylic, shaped by sustained engagement with both Chinese and Western pictorial traditions. He graduated from the art program at Guangxi Yulin Teachers College in 1982, pursued further study in Beijing from 1985 to 1987, later trained in Shi Qi’s studio at the Beijing Painting Academy in 2002, and completed the Advanced Program in New Chinese Painting at Tsinghua University in 2009. These formative experiences informed a visual language grounded in observation, structural clarity, and sensitivity to atmosphere across media.

Wai’s paintings frequently attend to the rhythms of urban and natural environments, translating lived experience into compositions marked by luminosity, compression, and measured lyricism. His works have been selected for multiple editions of the China National Art Exhibition, the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial, and the Li Jian Chen Watercolour Biennial Exhibition. Alongside his studio practice, he has held signifi cant roles in Hong Kong and regional art organizations, re ecting a longstanding contribution to the broader ecology of Chinese art.
