Josephine Chow

Josephine CHOW Suk-Fan, graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1989. That same year, she jointly established the Culture Corner Art Academy with Mr. Gaylord Chan, and over the following decade, she established several art societies while holding key positions. As she actively promoted artistic development, she gradually formed her unique artistic philosophy. She firmly believes that art and life are integrated—art is not only the spiritual crystallization of human civilization but also a vessel for complex and ever-changing emotions. These emotions evolve over time, shaped by environment, geography, and cultural differences.
In her creative practice, Josephine draws profound inspiration from nature—flora, celestial bodies, mountains, and oceans all become subjects of her paintings. Beginning in 2010, she has developed a unique artistic technique. She has drawn some forms on rice and bamboo paper - used incense to burn the paper carefully, creating delicate charred edges and tiny holes that form intriguing patterns. These treated papers are then meticulously collaged onto canvas and layered with acrylic paint, producing translucent and textured surfaces.
In 2012, her work underwent a transformative shift as she began incorporating metallic tones, particularly gold, captivated by its sacred and solemn symbolism. In her hands, each colour carries distinct metaphorical meaning, and through the interplay of different material textures, she conveys profound emotional depth.
She describes her intriguing creative process: “First, I outline a form or shape on rice or bamboo paper. Then, I carefully burn the edges according to the form or shape with incense before transferring it onto canvas, where I overlay it with acrylic painting. I collect petals, deceased butterflies, bark, and wood—all fragments of nature—and transform them into artworks.”
