Floating Weeds - Shunga & community illustration exhibition by Po Hung

Floating Weeds is the latest exhibition of Hung Man-Po, featuring a selection of his illustrations from the Sham Shui Po community series. These artworks reflect his observations of the community life in Sham Shui Po, where he currently resides, capturing both the present and his memories from the past decades. His latest Ukiyo-e artworks are also presented in the exhibition, expressing his reactions to contemporary societal issues. Each illustration is intricately detailed, inviting viewers to explore and ponder various aspects.

“Ukiyo Monogatari” mentioned, “When everything goes wrong, it is called the floating world.” From this perspective, it is evident that life won’t always go as planned, which is a common worldly truth. Therefore, the momentary ‘world-weary’ view transforms into hedonistic pleasure-seeking, emphasizing the craving for immediate enjoyment.

Hung Man Po’s observations of the current social phenomena in Hong Kong resonate well with the concept of “Ukiyo” from Japan’s Edo period, particularly the ‘happiness unto death’ consciousness found in the “Shunga” (a type of Ukiyo-e art) artwork. Several new pieces of Hong Kong “Shunga” have thus emerged, reflecting this sentiment and responding to the Hong Kong Government’s Art March by organizing “The Floating Grass” exhibition, aiming to share the joy with the public, living life to the fullest!
